First VoIP Call over Satellite Network by Elektrobit

Previously the satellite phones were huge suitcase size devices however with the advent of latest technology, the size of the devices have reduced considerably.

You may now experience a VoIP call over a satellite network, Elektrobit a Finnish engineering company has come up with the technology.

Quite similar to smartphones, the satellite-terrestrial smartphone reference design represents the world’s first quad-band GSM and tri-band WCDMA/HSPA device running the Microsoft(R) Windows(TM) Mobile 6.5 operating system, and offering integrated satellite-terrestrial voice and data capabilities.

Japan Economy Shrinks 12.7%, Steepest Drop Since 1974 Oil Shock

Feb. 16 (Bloomberg) — Japan’s economy shrank at an annual 12.7 percent pace last quarter, the most since the 1974 oil shock, as recessions in the U.S. and Europe triggered a record drop in exports.

Gross domestic product fell for a third straight quarter in the three months ended Dec. 31, the Cabinet Office said today in Tokyo. The median estimate of 26 economists surveyed by Bloomberg News was for an 11.6 percent

India Budget Deficit May Be Double Target Amid Global Recession

Feb. 16 (Bloomberg) — India’s budget deficit may be almost double next year’s planned target as the government steps up spending to protect the economy from the global recession ahead of elections in two months.

Spending will rise 6 percent to 9.53 trillion rupees ($196 billion) in the year starting April 1, Foreign Minister Pranab Mukherjee said today without unveiling any tax cuts. That will result in a budget gap of 5.5 percent of gross domestic product by March 31, 2010, compared with a 3 percent target, he said while releasing the interim budget in parliament in New Delhi.
